![]() White’s debut album, 2012’s Blunderbuss, reportedly inspired by his divorce from Karen Elson, sounded uncharacteristically bilious, especially from the man who wrote “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”. The Dead Weather can be admirably heavy and darkly savage, but also dour and claustrophobic, as though the riffs are closing in on you. Despite their pedigree, the Raconteurs never really figured out their mission (although hiring country singer Ashley Monroe might be mission enough). His work has become fuller, of course, more elaborate and more conventionally ambitious his idiosyncrasies have dimmed a bit, too, so his music is less subversive, less culture-shaking, less special. Since the White Stripes split, however, Jack moved into a bigger room, surrounded by musicians who are capable in the traditional sense of the word. Theirs was a little room, as Jack sang on White Blood Cells, but they still found many corners. ![]() Like first-gen punks, the White Stripes proved you didn’t have to be good to be great, that your limitations could enable rather than hinder expression. After so many generations of Eric Claptons and Jonny Langs, it was refreshing at the turn of the century to hear someone have fun with the form again. The blues has always prized instrumental prowess, but blues rock typically equates that trait with authenticity of emotion. That playful sound is what made the White Stripes so revolutionary in the 2000s. He soloed frequently but never pointlessly, and indulged none of the ostentatious jamming that defines blues rock: no white-boy blues face, no standing at the lip of the stage, no look-how-deeply-I-am-feeling-these-notes bullshit. ![]() After her capture, she was repeatedly raped and mutilated by the so-called protectors-the armed forces. Her chops might have been rudimentary, but Meg kept Jack’s guitar virtuosity in check and kept their music from being merely a display of technique. But Dopdi was a strong tribal woman fighting for the rights of her community alongside her husband, Dulna. Much like her mythological counterpart Draupadi of the Mahabharata, she is humiliated and objectified. " The short story 'Dopdi' shows the female body getting battered and bruised, in the name of 'apprehending' the naxalite rebel Dopdi. Kali Tal quotes Anthony Wilden in her book 'Worlds of Hurt' as thus " Male control over women and their bodies is the oldest form of private property the division of productive labour by sex is the oldest form of class distinction male monopolies of myth, ritual and religion are the oldest form of ideology male supremacy is the oldest form of imperialism. In J M Coetzee's award winning novel 'Disgrace', the rape of Lucy, a white woman, by the blacks, can be seen as an act of gaining control over the white community by overpowering a 'white woman'. The female bodies have been the objects through which 'control' is attained by the male. " The trauma of gender violence has been explored in literature time and again. ![]() Cathy Caruth, in her book 'Unclaimed Experience' quotes Freud as thus " …trauma seems to be much more than a pathology, or the simple illness of a wounded psyche it is always the wound that cries out, that addresses us in the attempt to tell us of a reality or truth that is not otherwise available. In later contexts, it came to be known as an injury that was imposed on the mind. The original meaning of the word 'trauma' refers to wounds which are inflicted on the body. The paper attempts a nuanced analysis of how extreme gender violence leads to different kinds of trauma for the victims. The concept of the 'female body', which is used to subjugate women in both body and spirit, can be explored differently in the two stories. The paper has attempted to compare Emma Donoghue's novel Room and Mahasweta Devi's short story Dopdi with reference to the body pathologies, power structures and identity revealed in the two narratives. The paper seeks to make an examination of 'trauma' in the context of gender.
